A New Life

Description: You take a room in a shared house in a town you never meant to stay in. So did everyone else. Three months was the plan. It usually is. Everyone here said something like it once, and stayed anyway — and none of them will tell you that until you've been around long enough to be worth telling. The only one who isn't stuck is passing through, and she's the hardest of all to hold on to. You get a room, a job, and time. The town runs on its own hours. People are where they're supposed to be, doing what they'd be doing whether you turned up or not, and finding them means learning the shape of their week. The work is real work. What you become is built out of how you choose to answer people — talk to this place long enough and it decides what you're good at. The phone keeps going between one evening and the next. Eventually someone texts first.
